LA EXTRANJERA/ THE STRANGER by Carla Badillo.

He aquí la extranjera
Patrona de los proscritos
la que baila en un mosaico de cráneos
al son de los resucitados.
He aquí la extranjera
la niña vieja
la vieja niña
llega desempolvando sus manos
enderezando sus dientes
rechinando sus huesos.
He aquí la extranjera
Defensora de los solitarios
la ermitaña
la viajera
la contradictoria.
He aquí la fragmentada
Protectora de los disidentes
la que lleva en sus maletas
todos los nombres
todos los tiempos
todas las razas.
He aquí la extranjera
la de la sonrisa triste
la amante infiltrada
la que camufla en sus ojos
la navaja.

Here she’s the stranger
mistress of exiles
who dances in a mosaic of skulls
to the sound of those raised from the dead.
Here she’s the stranger
the girl old
the old girl
comes dusting her hands
straightening her teeth
gritting her bones.
Here she’s the stranger
defender of the solitary ones
the hermit
the traveler
the contradictory one.
Here she’s the fragmented
protector of dissidents
who carries in her suitcases
all names
all times
all races.
Here she’s the stranger
she of the sad smile
the infiltrating lover
who camouflages in her eyes
the jack-knife.
